It was “go, go, go” at the Children’s Centre at Heathlands Village recently, when our Purple Room Community Centre was transformed into a Grand Prix circuit!

Fourteen regular young attendees of our Project Smile Play and Learn Groups fired up their engines and spent an afternoon of fun racing in electric cars and on bicycles and scooters.

The Fed’s CAST (Community Advice and Support Team) Manager, Sara Ogden-Thompson, said:

“A large group of children had the time of their lives, especially in the brilliant cars.  We laid a track with traffic lights, cones, policeman – and numerous speeding tickets were issued!

All of the children who attend ‘Smile’ have additional needs; some with both physical and learning disabilities. Even those who are usually wheelchair-bound were able to join in with their friends.

It was just wonderful to be able to provide an environment and activity where they could play alongside their peers.

We are grateful to Rays of Sunshine, a London-based charity supporting children with serious illnesses, for their generous donation of the electric cars; while the bikes and scooters were purchased with charitable grants from Persimmon Trust and Key 103’s Cash For Kids scheme.
