I am so excited to be undertaking the Trek4MyVoice at the beginning of June. I am a bit of a veteran as this will be my 3rd Trek following the journey “The Windermere Boys” made in 1945.
2 years ago I was privileged to make the journey on foot from Theresienstadt concentration camp to the centre of Prague following the route The Boys took after their liberation. From Prague they were airlifted to Carlisle before being taken to the Calgarth Estate in Windermere which they referred to as Gan Eden and it was there that they “came back to life”. Last October I was lucky enough to continue to retrace their footsteps when my son and I took part in the “Next Generation Regenesis Trek” recreating The Boys time in the Lakes. I will now be completing the jigsaw by trekking their route from Carlisle to their special home in Calgarth a mere 50km stroll!
While this is the final piece for me into an inspirational journey into history there is also a charity working tirelessly to document the stories of the few survivors remaining; and sadly this is a race against time. The Fed’s My Voice project records the whole life-stories in the first person of Holocaust Survivors who settled in the UK following their horrendous life experiences. The testimony documented in these books provides a priceless historical record.
Additionally, the My Voice team take survivors and their stories into so many schools within the North West and London ensuring that living, breathing first hand testimonies of the Holocaust are shared with scores of teenagers.
Please dig deep and sponsor me on the final part of a journey that has taken me from the bleak prison walls of Theresienstadt to the stunning Calgarth Estate and help My Voice continue its invaluable work.
Thank you so much, Vikki
