The Fed and Magen David Adom UK were proud to welcome Lord David Wolfson KC, Shadow Attorney General, to Bowdon Synagogue on 11 June for a compelling evening of discussion, attended by more than 175 members of the community.
Hosted by Raphi Bloom, The Fed’s Director of Fundraising & Marketing, on behalf of The Fed and the My Voice Project, the event explored some of the most significant issues facing the Jewish community today, alongside wider political and societal challenges.
Widely recognised as one of the UK Jewish community’s most respected and influential voices, Lord Wolfson brought both insight and humour to a wide-ranging conversation covering leadership, the current political landscape and the changing realities of Jewish life in Britain.
A substantial part of the discussion focused on Israel and the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, examining the international response and the impact of recent events on Jewish communities around the world. Topics included the scrutiny placed on Israel in the international arena, the UK Government’s position on issues such as the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the International Criminal Court (ICC) and recognition of the State of Palestine, as well as the wider implications for diaspora Jewry.
The conversation also addressed the sharp rise in anti-Jewish racism since 7 October, community safety, freedom of expression, and the evolving dynamics of protest movements and Muslim-Jewish interfaith relations. Throughout the evening, Lord Wolfson offered thoughtful perspectives on the challenges and opportunities facing the Jewish community in an increasingly complex social and political environment.
The event was further enhanced by the attendance of Daniela Grudsky Eckstein, Chargé d’Affaires at the Israeli Embassy in London, who thanked Manchester’s Jewish community for its continued support of Israel, particularly in the period following 7 October. She also joined in an engaging audience question-and-answer session, which prompted lively discussion and thoughtful contributions from attendees.
The evening also highlighted the strong partnership between The Fed and Magen David Adom UK, organisations united by a shared commitment to care, resilience and community support. Together, they continue to strengthen connections between communities in Greater Manchester and Israel, supporting people both locally and overseas.
The event provided an important opportunity for community members to engage directly with senior public figures, explore complex issues, and take part in meaningful dialogue on matters affecting Jewish life in the UK and beyond.
The Fed would like to thank Lord David Wolfson KC, Daniela Grudsky Eckstein, Magen David Adom UK, Bowdon Synagogue and everyone who attended for helping to make the evening such a valuable and memorable occasion.
