Unpaid family carers registered with The Fed shared a wonderful trip to the peaceful haven of RHS Garden Bridgewater to mark Carers Week.

Family carers are any age or gender and looking after a loved one who cannot manage without your support can be very isolating; friends often fall away over time. But coming together with others who understand your life, because they too are carers, or were so in recent times, can be immensely therapeutic.

Over the years some wonderful friendships have been formed through attending groups run by The Fed, and trips like today’s. Carers come back home refreshed and feeling mentally more able to face the challenges of looking after someone who is largely or totally dependent on them for their daily needs.

Caring for someone can be full of loss. It can take its toll physically and mentally and if YOU are a carer, the number one message is that you must look after yourself first.

Reach out to The Fed if you need support and find out what benefits or budget you may be entitled to; what your rights are; how you can arrange for respite; what organisations can offer you support; how you can meet other carers in person or online if getting out of the house is a problem.

“There is a fascinating link – between access to green space, such as fields, forests, parks and gardens, and a reduced risk of mental health problems, improved mood, and increased life satisfaction.” (Thriving with Nature) Mental Health Foundation
